This early work by Charles W. Chesnutt was originally published in 1901. Charles Waddell Chesnutt was born to freed African-American parents in Cleveland, Ohio, USA in 1858. After having published numerous short stories in journals and magazines, he finally produced a collection, The Conjure Woman, in 1899. It was well received and subsequently set the tone for a glittering literary career. The Marrow of Tradition is his second novel and the follow up to his most famous work, The House Behind the Cedars. This is a fascinating work, thoroughly recommended for anyone interested in the subject of race in American literary history. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

Great condition
I had to read the book for a class and it was better than expected. Lots of drama. It will keep you on your toes and make you want to read till the very end.
What a deep but heavy novel. Definitely both a great read and an ideal view into Chesnutt's authorial prowess.
Read it for a class....needless to say I expected one more boring old story of racism, but it was actually quite intriguing. The author's message clearly does revolve around race; the book itself is based on an actual race riot. But the characters are also intriguing... You get emotionally involved with them, and care about the story. Came in great condition.
Exactly the book I needed for my sons literacy class. It came quickly, and was in very good condition. The price was unbelievable!
Excellent, this item is exactly what I expected.
A fantastically written story. Enjoy.
